How to choose RV & boat storage: a practical checklist
Before you sign, walk the lot and ask these questions. Write the answers down so you can compare facilities.
1. Measure first
Know your total length including the tongue, ladder and any bike rack, plus height to the top of the A/C unit. Covered spaces have a maximum clearance, and long rigs need room to swing in.
2. Access
- What are the gate hours? Is there 24/7 keypad access?
- Are the drive lanes wide enough for you to back in comfortably?
- Is the road in paved or gravel, and does it flood or ice up?
3. Security
- Is the lot fenced with a coded gate?
- Are there cameras, and does anyone actually review them?
- Is there lighting at night? Is there on-site staff?
4. Amenities
Common extras include dump stations, fresh water, air for tires, washing areas and electric hookups for battery maintainers. Ask which ones are included and which cost extra.
5. Contract and insurance
- Is it month-to-month or a lease? What's the notice period?
- How and when can the price go up?
- Does the facility require you to carry your own insurance? Check with your insurer, because many policies change when a vehicle is in storage.
6. Prep before you drop it off
Clean out food, cover or remove batteries (or use a maintainer), protect tires from UV, and follow your manufacturer's storage and winterizing steps.
